Hamilton Model Engineering Club
The "Websites by Members" Project

Made with Nvu

NEW:  The "Websites by Members" instructional cd-rom has been distributed!  If you didn't get one, send an email to the webmaster (or take out the one in the club library).  Check out the example website "clubtrial" from the cd-rom - then give it a try!

What the Project is About

Now that the club has a complete & working website, one of the things it can be used for is as a directory to point to the websites of individual club members. Members now have a new way to present their models or projects, give additional information about projects that have been shown at club meetings, and offer a tour of their shop.

An Outline of the Steps Involved

  • First you will need to gather up the raw materials that will become your website content. This usually involves pictures, either prints that can be scanned or digital camera pictures, other printed material such as drawings, and information about what you are presenting.
  • Then you can form a rough outline of what to present and  how to organize and lay out the related pictures, drawings, text descriptions and other materials
  • Next thing to do would be to establish your web space where you can "publish" your web page, by using the free web space available with your present internet service provider (e.g.: sympatico, rogers, cogeco, or mountaincable ), or signing up for free space at one of the portals, such as "tripod", that offer such services.
  • Now, with everything at hand, you can use an html editor (such as the suggested Nvu program) to assemble this material to create your website, by making the file that is sent to the website provider that you have chosen.
  • Finally you "publish" your website by sending the created files to the website provider's computer, using the built-in facilities of Nvu (or you can use a separate program to do this), and letting the club webmaster know it's address (so he can add it to the "links" page).
  • Once you have your website established, you can periodically make changes to it by editing the file and publishing it again; or you can add content and features to make your website larger and fancier.

The Power of Working Together

In order to encourage club members to get involved and take advantage of this opportunity, the club will provide anyone interested with a cd-rom containing a collection of free software and information sufficient to create, edit and publish their website. The club is also willing to organise some "learning get-togethers"  where you can get hands-on instruction on the steps involved in making your website.

A Final Word

Having your own website is quick, easy and cheap.  This page of the club website was made in 2 short evenings using Nvu. You will experience the satisfaction of putting yourself on the Web, and the club will benefit from your sharing!
